Latest Book Review: Rebel Ideas, by Matthew Syed

Writer's picture: Matthew JenkinsMatthew Jenkins

Diversity isn’t some optional add-on. It isn’t the icing on the cake. Rather, it is the basic ingredient of collective intelligence.

Be acutely aware of COLLECTIVE BLINDNESS – Encircled by people who reflect your picture of reality, and whose picture you reflect back to them, it is easy to become more confident of judgements that are incomplete or downright wrong. Certainty becomes inversely correlated with accuracy.

Build a team of REBELS, NOT CLONES – Teams of rebels beat teams of clones every time. When smart people from a singular background are placed into a decision-making group, they are likely to become collectively blind. Groups have an inbuilt tendency to become clone-like. Crowds are not always wise. They can become dangerously clone-like.

Value CONSTRUCTIVE DISSENT in your team –The greatest tragedy of mankind comes from the inability of people to have thoughtful disagreement to find out what’s true. No amount of commitment can drive effective decision-making in a situation of complexity when diverse opinions are supressed.
