FIVE TIMELESS LESSONS FROM BILL GATES, ANDY GROVE AND STEVE JOBS

  1. Look forward, reason back

Look to the future when setting strategy but do so with clear understanding of where you have come from and what you have learned.

  1. Make bets but don’t bet the company

Bet big to change the game but don’t do it at the cost of everything. In betting big, be prepared to cannibalize your own business and cut your losses when needed.

  1. Build platforms not just products

Avoid obsolescence by thinking beyond products and instead create platforms and ecosystems that everything can hang off. Create your own complements!

  1. Exploit both leverage and power

Stay under the radar but don’t be afraid to throw your weight around when necessary. Keep your enemies close while embracing and extending your competitors strengths.

  1. Be tight on a handful of things

Know your strengths and weaknesses. Pay attention to the right detail and remain disciplined with it. Keep the big picture front and centre in your thinking and give power to the people on your team who have all the really valuable knowledge.
