Latest Book Review: Find Your Voice, by Caroline Goyder

Writer's picture: Matthew JenkinsMatthew Jenkins

The best speakers – those we truly connect with – have a series of three phases – work, rest and play.

Effective speakers first create great content.  They work to get their content honed and edited so they are clear on their messages.

Then they rest before they speak so that their content can settle. This way, when they walk out in front of the audience, they are able to relax and enjoy the moment, knowing all the prep is done, and they can focus on connecting with the audience. Their words are so clear they can play and riff with the audience. Prepare enough that

you can riff and you really become interesting to the audience.

What works for an audience is calm, centred, self-aware confidence – the self-actualised kind. When you speak up in confidence, people remember you.

We are wired to assess trust. When your tone is easy and conversational – when there’s a harmony between what you are thinking and saying – the audience relaxes and listens.

Why does our attention spike when we see someone relax and speak conversationally? It’s become we see someone confident enough to trust themselves to be spontaneous and not overly rehearsed. It creates a sense of trust.
