Latest Book Review: Tribe, by Sebastian Junger

Writer's picture: Matthew JenkinsMatthew Jenkins

Humans need three basic things to be content: they need to feel competent at what they do; they need to feel authentic in their lives; and they need to feel connected to others. These values are considered “intrinsic” to human happiness and far outweighs “extrinsic” values such as beauty, money and status.

The earliest and most basic definition of community – of tribe – would be the group of people that you would both help feed and help defend.

Group cooperation triggers higher levels of oxytocin. Oxytocin creates a feedback loop of good-feeling and group loyalty that ultimately leads members to “self-sacrifice to promote group welfare.”

Belonging to society requires sacrifice, and that sacrifice gives back way more than it costs, for solidarity is at the core of what it means to human.

Acting in a tribal way simply means being willing to make a substantive sacrifice for your community – be that your neighbourhood, your workplace, or your entire country.
